Since September 2012 I am working as a teacher in a "Realschule", a kind of school for children between 10 and 19 years.

My subjects are physics, philosphy/ ethics (ger. Praktische Philosophie) and computer science. I have graduated the 2. State examination in the year 2011. My qualification is to teach high school students (ger. Sekundarstufe I).

What kind of teacher am I?

I like to work with students of all ages. In my classes, students always have to do their best, but with fun! It’s much easier to learn with a little bit of fun, because you are relaxed. And that is not only my opinion, it´s really a proven fact. But that doesn´t means, that the school is not challenging.

Whenever there is a chance, I like to let the students learn in their own way in groups or alone. In physics, for example, the students get a difficult research assignment, which they have to solve in a given time and then present their solution. But I also like to explore things with the students in discourses or present them school stuff supported with multimedia.

Philosophy/ Ethics (ger. Praktische Philosophie) is a really challenging and interesting subject. Especially in the age between 10 and 15 years, when the children are not able to think in abstract or high abstract ways and have to be reached in other ways. A good way to do that is to work on concrete cases, so that the students can find the philosophical messages by thinking and debating about the case.

What is teacher trainee?

If you want to become teacher in Germany you have to do a lot of things!
First of all you have to study at the university. Normally 2 subjects but some like to study more. Moreover you have to study education science quite like a 3. subject. In some cases, you have to learn a lot about the basics of German language didactics or mathematics didactics. That depends on your wish, what kind of school you want to teach in. If you have done all this, you are not ready to become a regular teacher. Because now the professional training starts and that means you have to teach for about 2 years (depending on the federal state) in a school, but you’re not always alone and you don’t teach as much as normal teachers. You have many instructors, who came a few times to visit you during your classes. You have to reflect everything that you do in the school, sometimes with one, two or three instructors. After all that there is a last examination and after all that you can finally become a teacher.
